SITA CleanoSpector Handheld Metal Cleanliness Test Instrument
About CleanoSpector Handheld Metal Cleanliness Test Instrument
The SITA CleanoSpector is an easy-to-use handheld non-destructive metal cleanliness test instrument used for measuring organic contamination such as oil, grease, coolants, release agents and cleaning fluid on metal surfaces. The instrument is widely used in automotive, aerospace and medical device industries and allows users to evaluate cleanliness directly at the cleaning process station, on the production line, during field work, or in the laboratory.
The instrument has been specifically designed for measuring the cleanliness of manufactured metal parts to ensure surfaces are free of contaminants before the next manufacturing process e.g. assembly, sealing, bonding, painting, printing, lacquering, laser welding. etc. The test results are measured in RFU (relative fluorescence unit). The lower the RFU, the cleaner the part.
Applications
- Non-contact and non-destructive cleanliness inspection of metal surfaces – at the push of button
- Quality assurance of industrial cleaning processes
- Layer thickness measurement e.g. thickness of applied corrosion protection or adhesive primer
How does it work?
The CleanoSpector detects contamination by emitting focused UV light onto the surface and measuring the fluorescence from any organic compounds; metal and ceramic surfaces do not fluoresce. The fluorescence intensity depends on the amount of contamination found on the surface at the measuring point, i.e. the higher the fluorescence the more contamination on the surface.
The CleanoSpector is readily and quickly calibrated by you using a reference calibration standard, which we provide. Evaluation of the cleanliness of part’s surface is achieved by comparing to the reference. The result is given in relative fluorescence units (RFU).
Advantages of using the CleanoSpector fluorescence method for measuring metal cleanliness
- Non-contact, non-destructive test
- Fast test at the push of a button, intuitive operation
- Can detect contamination on parts with various geometries – flat, round, curved, in grooves
- Works on metals, ceramics
- Mobile and robust, used on the shopfloor and in the lab
- Various spacers are available for easy measurement of different part shapes to ensure optimal focal length

- Monitoring the cleanliness of metal parts before laser welding
- Automotive crank shafts, pistons, cam shafts and con-rods after cleaning
- Pistons for hydraulic pumps before hardening – residual contamination has an influence on the steel quality in the hardening furnace
- Stainless steel pipes before coating (e.g. in vehicle construction)
- Detecting residual agents and encapsulation material on bond pads before wire bonding in electronics
- Flux residues on gold bond pads on ceramic pcb substrates
- Surface inspection on electrical contacts after stripping of insulation material
- Gear case parts before coating or bonding
- Medical device instruments and implants before delivering to the user
- Cleanliness of parts before vacuum or powder coating
- Controlling layer thickness of anti-corrosive agents, oils, waxes or bonding agents
- Cleanliness inspection of sealing groove in aluminium die cast housings for engine control units (ECU), automated driving control unit, power electronics for e-mobility, & pumps
- Inspection for filmic contamination on parts in medical or vacuum technology
- Inspection for sufficient layer thickness when applying corrosion protection oils or when applying a primer prior to adhesive bonding
